What is a pet allergy?
A pet allergy is caused by proteins found in an animal’s dander (dried flakes of skin), saliva, or urine. When exposed to these proteins, your immune system mistakes them for something harmful and has an allergic reaction. This isn’t something that only happens with cats and dogs. Pretty much any animal with fur or feathers can cause an allergic reaction in some people.
What are the symptoms of pet allergies?
If you have a pet allergy, you’ll probably notice symptoms like one or more of these:
• Coughing, wheezing and sore throat
• Stuffy nose or sneezing
• Itchy, watery eyes
• A runny nose
• Hives or rashes on the skin
• Postnasal drip (feeling like your nose is running)
How to reduce the symptoms of pet allergies
There are many ways to prevent and treat pet allergies. We’ve outlined some of them below:
Choose breeds known for fewer allergic responses
If you’re looking to add a new furry family member, check out breeds that are less likely to trigger your allergy symptoms before you make the leap. Many hypoallergenic dogs and cat breeds exist, which means they produce less dander and shed less hair than other animals. There are plenty of options for the allergen-wary animal lover, from goldendoodles to cockapoos!
Air-cleaners with HEPA filters can help
These filters help clean the air in your home and improve your overall air quality. Even if you don’t have an allergy sufferer in the house, this is a good investment. Most of them will fit right on your wall or under a couch or table.
Avoid cuddling with your pet
You might think brushing up against your pup or kitty is a great way to bond, but it could actually contribute to your allergy symptoms. So try not to sit on the couch next to each other or snuggle up in bed together!
Bathe your pet once a week
It’s easy for many allergens – pet dander included – to get into your house and stay there for a long time, especially when they’re attached to your pets. By bathing your pet once a week, you’ll reduce the amount of allergens that remain in your home and reduce the symptoms you experience.
Consider replacing carpet with hard flooring
Carpet is notoriously difficult to clean and holds on to dander and other allergens even after cleaning. So if you’re serious about cutting down on symptoms, consider replacing it with hard flooring, which is easier to clean and maintain.
