So you want a guinea pig? Here’s what you need to know

Guinea pigs are one of the most popular pets in the UK and are adored by animal lovers of all ages. They’re a perfect first pet for young children, as they don’t require walking like dogs, and their cages are relatively easy to maintain.

In some countries, guinea pigs are known as cavies. They are native to South America, and there are 13 different breeds of guinea pigs in the wild. Guinea pigs are first thought to have been domesticated around 7,000 years ago – and have been revered by humans ever since. They have been depicted in South American folk art dating as far back as 500 BC, and in some cultures, they had religious significance.

How long do guinea pigs live?

Domesticated guinea pigs can live for anywhere between 4-8 years. The world record for the oldest guinea pig belongs to a UK pet known as Snowball, who lived for 14 years and 10 months. Snowball passed away on Valentine’s Day (February 14th) 1979.

While it is unlikely that most guinea pigs will enjoy the same sort of lifespan as a snowball, with the right care and attention there is no reason why a pet guinea pig will not live for the best part of a decade.

A calming environment and a life free from pet stress are two key factors in helping a guinea pig to live a long and happy life. To help reduce anxiety in your guinea pig without sedation, and to help new pets be more attentive and receptive, you may want to consider providing your animal with Pet Remedy. It’s suitable for all mammals, birds and reptiles, and can be incredibly beneficial for pets of all sizes, from guinea pigs to horses.

How active are guinea pigs?

Guinea pigs are incredibly active animals and can be awake for as many as 20 hours a day. This means guinea pigs thrive best when they have plenty of space to move around in. An exercise run that your guinea pig can explore will help keep it fit and healthy. If possible, you may want to allow your guinea pig to exercise outdoors too (in an enclosed space or outdoor pen, of course).

What do guinea pigs eat?

Guinea pigs require a constant supply of grass or premium-quality hay. They do not produce vitamin C, and therefore also need leafy greens like spinach, kale and broccoli. It is important to ensure your guinea pig gets the correct diet, as this will keep its teeth in good condition and promote a healthy digestive system.

Root vegetables, such as carrots, are also a favourite among guinea pigs. However, these sorts of vegetables are naturally high in sugar and should only be given in moderation.

Guinea pigs are expert communicators

Did you know that guinea pigs can make 11 different noises? From purring to the infamous “week-week” sound we associate with them, guinea pigs will spend a lot of time chatting amongst themselves – which is all the more reason to perhaps have more than one guinea pig so that your pets can enjoy some good conversation and like-minded company!
